Apple Sage by Simpson & Vail

Updated: Oct 17, 2020

I'm gonna start out a little off track.  Work with me for a minute.

Many years ago, I came across a recipe for a twist on Thanksgiving dressing.  It has Hawaiian sweet bread as the base, celery, onion, dried cranberries, and....apples and sage.  It's now one of my favorite dishes to make for the holidays and it's a big hit with friends and family. I can't wait to dig in to it this year!

So...apples and sage in my hot tea? Bring it on!  I mentioned savory herbs in tea a few weeks ago in another review.  It's not a new thing, but many haven't experienced what they usually consider "cooking herbs" outside of their favorite recipes.  When blended properly, savory herbs in your tea bring your sipping experience to a whole new level.  Even if sage is not your favorite flavor or essence in food, give it a chance in a cup of tea; it's much different and quite enjoyable!

The lovely folks at Simpson & Vail shared a few of their current featured blends with me that are perfect for Fall.  The Apple Sage Tea grabbed my attention first; it just sounds so crisp and fresh.  Now, if you have read my reviews, you know that I like my tea strong.  I usually steep far longer than suggested and recently, I've gotten busy and left my tea for far too long so...I set a timer so as not to ruin my first cup of this new brew.  Perfection!

This is a black tea blend with blackberry leaf and, of course, apple and sage.  The sage is aromatic with a mild flavor which, is what you want; you don't want your tea to taste too "sagey" (is that even a word?) like your grandmas turkey stuffing.  There are some healthy chunks of dried apple in the mix and they lend their mild sweetness to smooth out the flavor combination. I added about 1/2 teaspoon of honey and it really enhanced all of the flavors.

I'm super happy I picked this out of my "review box" this morning.  It made for a great mid-day hot cuppa. It's cheerful and mellow all at the same time; clean and bright with a soothing aroma.  Lucky me: I have enough in my sample pouch to do a cold brew overnight.  If you follow the Instagram page, watch for a little blurb about that, too!
