I LOVE yaupon tea, especially iced. Here in Texas, yaupon grows like wildfire and it was only a few years ago that I learned it could be used as an herb for tea. Glad somebody figured that out!
Yaupon is one of very few naturally caffeinated herbs and it’s loaded in antioxidants. This tea from By Humble Goods was my first time to try green yaupon and I must say, I like it better than the roasted versions I’ve tried.
The brew is a light greenish-yellow, much like green tea. The flavor however, isn’t like green tea at all. It tastes much like regular iced tea made with black tea, but on a much milder and smooth level. If you love good ole southern iced tea, I guarantee you will love yaupon tea.
One of the great things about yaupon tea is that it doesn’t contain the tannins that regular tea leaves do. You can over-steep (like I do so often) and you don’t have to worry about bitterness. AND, it can be re-steeped multiple times.
If you’ve never tried yaupon tea, do yourself a favor and get this tea. And, try some of the other varieties while you’re shopping. It makes an amazing iced tea for summer (it’s good hot, too!). It has a mild sweetness that’s delicious on it’s own, but I love it with a little sweetener.
