Just your average chai? Well if you’re looking for the spicy masala that you love, this isn’t your average chai at all! In fact it’s nothing like what most of us know as “chai”.
Ivan chai is a very popular Russian “tea”. The word for tea in Russia is pronounced “chay”. Here in America, the herb used for Ivan chai is known as fireweed. There’s tons of really cool historical stories about Ivan chai…hit the Googles for some fun information and learn about the LONG list of health benefits.
So, on to the tasting. The best way I can describe the flavor is a cross between a green and a black tea. There’s some mild earthiness and a little bit of a seaweed-ish note like a green tea. The caramel notes are what give the black tea association. It’s a bold brew while still being very smooth with no acidity. What I loved most about this tea is the creamy finish; no milk or cream…it has its own creamy notes all on its own. Of course, y’all know I love a little sweetness so, of course I preferred it with a little honey. VERY GOOD!!
Prime Tea Shop also recommended making my own blend of Ivan chai with some of their fruit teas. This tea can be steeped overnight with no bitterness!
