Purple tea. Another new one for me!
Honestly, I fully expected a brew that was the color of grape jelly. Instead, there was a slightly pinkish brew that reminds me of a darker rosé wine.
This had a slightly sweet aroma, almost a caramel fragrance.
I was very surprised at the flavor of this tea. I thought it would be very strong and bitter...just my odd association to “purple”. Quite the opposite, this tea was very mild and smooth with very low acidity and stringency. Very enjoyable on its own, but also excellent with a spoon full of honey.
Purple tea comes from the camellia sinensis plant, just like green or black tea, but a different variety. The purple color of the leaves comes from a high concentration of polyphenols, much like the antioxidants found in blueberries and grapes. These antioxidants are known for health benefits such as reducing cardiovascular disease and improving digestive health.
